Personal Statement Guidance

Just some general tips...

Click here to preview my personal statement

I received all 5 offers from: York, Sheffield, Surrey, Nottingham Trent and Oxford Brookes
Only York required an interview and I firmed York (AAA) and insured Surrey (AAB)

What do I need to do to make my personal statement seem worthy?

  • Show that you're able to undergo pressure and a willing student
    • What I mean by this is that you're able to learn independently (since that's what university is all about) and how you're able to learn a lot more on top of what you're expected to do
      • They don't expect you to know much about the subject BUT if you do make it seem like you know a sufficient amount and it's not what you're currently studying, it may make you seem like a worthy candidate and they may even lower the entry requirements for you!
    • Your willingness to go out your way to do work experience (gives you something to brag about in your personal statement ... e.g. "I did this AND NOW I WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS AND THIS AND DID THIS!!!!!"
  • Talk about yourself in the way the kind of student any university would want
    • Do you have any transferable skills?
    • What makes you unique?
    • What can you offer to the institution?
    • What would make you a good 'subject' student?
  • Ultimately, why are you passionate about that subject and what do you aim to achieve by studying that subject?
    • Pick up a few books, talk about specific ideas within books by specific people and how they make an important point, maybe say that it is what inspired you to WANT TO study the subject
    • Any trips/ talks/ summer schools linked to the subject that fuelled your interest further?
I would recommend avoiding bringing up quotes randomly and not discussing it, or even starting with a quote. I also attended a good 123908129038123 talks about UCAS Personal Statements (out of my own free-will) and they said they're bored of the word 'passion' so try not to use that word..

Remember. Simple and straight forward!

How should I structure my personal statement?!

  1. Punchy opening paragraph
    • How did the subject come to your interest?
    • What did it trigger or spark you to then aspire to do?
    • Your viewpoint of the subject and what it fascinates you enough to make you want to study a degree in it
  2. Middle paragraphs
    • What have you learnt through books about your subject?
    • Anything of particular interest in that book that made you SO INTERESTED?
    • Is there something about that book or what it says that made you think 'wait hang on, that's so interesting... WOW, I want to learn more' (lmao)
    • What have you taught yourself outside of school about your subject? (you need to show your willingness to go beyond the school curriculum)
    • Any specific area of your subject that interests you the most?
  3. Last paragraph
    • Talk about yourself as a unique individual
    • Other curricular activities you do outside of school
    • Your hobbies, what you enjoy
    • Perhaps a last sentence concluding about your enthusiasm for the subject and what you wish to go on to do in the future (not necessary but I did it anyways HAHAHA)
